In 1971 Charles Nearhoof and John Woomer purchased a machine shop located on 8th street in Philipsburg from Paul Williams. The business was called Nearhoof and Woomer Machine. The products manufactured at the time were Belding and Mull shooting accessories, N&W muzzle loader accessories and repair of heavy equipment for the local coal industry.
In 1972 Charles Nearhoof bought out his partner and the name of the company became Nearhoof Machine.
In 1975 Nearhoof Machine purchased the Central Intermediate Building behind WPHB, Philipsburg’s Radio Station. Products being manufactured were shooting assemblies, peanut processing equipment, and repair of heavy equipment.
In 1985 Nearhoof Machine purchased Mid State Electrical Engineering Co. in Osceola Mills.
Mid-State Electrical Engineering Co was founded in 1921 in Osceola Mills PA by Charles Cushing. It provided fabricating and repair of machinery and repair and rewinding of electric motors. Day to day services included repair and maintenance for many businesses. Customers ranged from coal and limestone mining to clothing and cigar manufacturing.
In 1969, Manager Alex Kost, purchased the business, upon Mr. Cushing’s death, and operated the company until his death in 1984. Mr. Kost’s widow then sold the business.
With the combining of the two companies, and with Nearhoof Machine’s added machining capabilities, provided even more services for our customers. During this period, Dynamic Balancing was offered to provide better quality and service.
In 1996 Nearhoof Machine’s purchase of a 42,000 sq ft building located on a 77 acre industrial site in Decatur Twp would bring Nearhoof Machine Inc and Mid-State Electric together under one roof. By 1998 CNC machines were added to do sub-contracting work for foundries and manufacturing companies.
Nearhoof Machine continues to provide our customers in Central Pennsylvania with quality and precision CNC machining.
